3 of the Best Castles in Ireland

With over 1,000 castles scattered throughout the country, it is nearly impossible to NOT see at least one castle during your stay in Ireland. If you’re planning that once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Emerald Isle, then you must add these 3 Irish castles to your bucket list.

So, without further ado, here are 3 of the best castles in Ireland:

1. Dublin Castle

Chances are, you’re landing bright and early in the busy city of Dublin. Why not start your castle-hopping off with the famous Dublin Castle? With remains dating back to the 13th century, it’s no wonder that this centrally-located castle makes it onto most itineraries. The castle is an easy walk from the lively Temple Bar area and beautiful City Hall.

I only got to see the outside structure (for free, of course), but many opt for a guided or self-guided tour of the inside. If you’re in a rush, you can get by with just photographing the castle itself. Next time I’m in Ireland, however, I will definitely be touring the inside of Dublin Castle!

Address: Dame St, Dublin 2, Ireland
Admission: Adult €8 (Guided Tours are €12)

2. Rock of Cashel

Isn’t this view absolutely stunning?

When my tour guide first pulled off the side of the road, I was unsure of what I was about to see. Once I caught sight of this beautiful castle-on-a-hill (cue Ed Sheeran’s song), I could not wait to explore it up close. And it did not disappoint! Rock of Cashel consists of many features, such as 13th century Gothic cathedral, limestone outcrops (including a 12th century round tower and High Cross), and other ancient fortifications. The historic archeological site may appear hard to reach, but it actually is just a short walk up from the Cashel town center.

I am dying to visit Rock of Cashel again, just to photograph it from every angle possible! It truly took my breath away. Please, whatever you do, make a stop to this magnificent castle.

3. Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore Abbey is such a charming, picture-perfect fairytale castle. Nestled along a scenic lake at the bottom of Doughruagh mountain, Kylemore Abbey’s beauty can be photographed from any direction. My favorite view of the castle is along the walk from the parking lot to the castle itself. The walk was SO peaceful and surreal. Make sure to photograph Kylemore Abbey where you can see the mountain, castle, & lake – all in one image!

A visit to this destination will take you through the restored Victorian rooms of the Abbey, down a woodland path to a neo-Gothic church, and to the Victorian Walled Garden. Oh, and of course a delicious stop for lunch at the cute cafes. While I didn’t make it to the popular gardens, the path from the Abbey to the neo-Gothic church was gorgeous. It reminded me of a scene from The Chronicles of Narnia!

Overall, you can’t miss this castle. It is a popular day trip from Dublin or Galway and definitely worth at least a few hours of your time. During your visit, don’t be like me and NOT visit the gardens. Do it all and go crazy with photos!
