Central Park – Explore the Fall Magic

Have you booked your trip to New York yet? If not, you must visit during the fall because Central Park in the months of October & November is absolutely breathtaking. In my opinion, fall is the BEST season to take a trip to this iconic NYC landmark and experience the fall magic.

Why, you might ask?

  • The weather averages between 50-60°F, depending on the month
  • Leaves are changing to vibrant red, orange, and yellow colors
  • Ice skating rinks are available
  • The park is extremely kid-friendly, unlike some of the other famous NYC stops
  • The leaves are falling, making every step through the park enjoyable
  • It’s free! Aside from the food and physical activities (bikes, carriages, ice skating, row boats, etc), simply walking through Central Park is free.
  • Did I mention the weather? Seriously, it’s amazing!

I’ve been to New York four times now, three of which were trips during the summer months. Every visit has included a stop at Central Park, and without a doubt, fall is much more enjoyable compared to summer. There’s not anything wrong with Central Park during the summer…it’s just that fall is simply magical.

Here are six of my absolute favorite spots to see in Central Park, whether it be for photography, relaxation, etc!

Gapstow Bridge

Central Park

There are numerous photogenic bridges throughout Central Park, but Gapstow Bridge has to be the prettiest! The views of the bridge and of the city skyline are worth a few minutes of your time.

It also is a great spot to watch ducks swim and other natural wildlife. I love this photograph of the pigeons flying around the Gapstow Bridge area

The Mall & Literary Walk

Central Park

No, it’s not actually a shopping mall…but that’s okay, because this stretch of nature is better than any shopping area. The Mall is a gorgeous walk in Central Park that cannot be missed. This particular photograph was shot just to the right of the actual “Mall” walking path.

At the southern end of the walk, which is most likely where you’ll be coming from, are multiple statues of prominent writers. Christopher Columbus is also located here, but he’s kind of an odd man out among these famous writers. Regardless, spend a few minutes admiring these tributes of important figures.

Along this walk you’ll find street/sidewalk vendors, live painters, huge bubbles for kids to play with (& try to pop), delicious snacks, and more. It really is one of the most beautiful places to watch the leaves change and experience the fall magic.

Bethesda Terrace & Fountain

Central Park

At the end of your walk along “The Mall,” you will stumble upon the iconic Bethesda Terrace & Fountain. If you have ever wondered where those famous archways and stairs are located in Central Park, this is the place! I find this area to be one of the busiest parts of the park, but that doesn’t mean you cannot relax and enjoy your time here. A popular thing to do is sit along the edge of the fountain and admire the scenery.

Here’s the reality of how busy the area can get:

Central Park

Again, don’t let the crowds stop you from visiting here. It’s a must-see in Central Park for many reasons. Of course, the terrace and fountain are beautiful, but this area provides you a great view of those renting row boats in The Lake.

This is actually my favorite spot in Central Park to take wedding photos. I adore anywhere that has stunning architecture, and Bethesda Terrace gives me just that.

While you’re in this general area, make sure to stop by Bow Bridge…one of Central Park’s most popular bridges.

Wollman Rink

If you were like me and thought that the beautiful ice skating rinks in NYC only appeared in the winter, then surprise! There are quite a few rinks in the city and Central Park’s has to be one of the most photogenic. I loved sitting up on the rocks behind the rink…taking in the view of the city skyline.

Although we did not actually go ice skating, it’s still at the top of my never-ending New York bucket list.

Belvedere Castle

Central Park

Did you know that New York City has its own 19th-century fairytale castle? Belvedere Castle still somehow remains a hidden gem, and I hope it stays that way.

This is a photo of the castle obviously from down below, but I recommend starting your site-seeing at top of the castle and then working your way down. Belvedere Castle contains exhibit rooms and an amazing observation deck, so there’s a little to do for everyone. If you haven’t already guessed, my favorite part is the view that comes from the observation deck.

Seated on Vista Rock, Belvedere Castle is surrounded by trees and shrubbery and overlooks the Great Lawn, Turtle Pond, Delacourt Theater, and Ramble.

Belvedere Castle’s name comes from belvedere, which means “beautiful view” in Italian. Check out the photo below and you’ll understand why:

Central Park

My jaw literally dropped when I caught sight of this. In any other season, I’m not quite sure if the gorgeous, picturesque view would have the same impact as does the fall.

You can’t skip out on visiting this castle. There are so many photography opportunities!

“The Belvedere Castle Walk”

Central Park

Okay, so there is not a specific name for this particular trek, but it’s too pretty for me not to share! As mentioned earlier, I recommend starting out at the top of Belvedere Castle, where you’ll find the exhibit rooms and amazing observation deck. Once you’re finished, walk down the path that goes around the lake to get a view of the castle from the ground.

This walk from the top of the castle to bottom is what I call, “The Belvedere Castle Walk.” Creative, right?

Though the name is not amusing, the photos speak for themselves. All along this walk are incredible water reflections, jogging paths, *more* food/snacks, and other great views.

The whole area surrounding Belvedere Castle is the perfect place to experience the fall magic of Central Park.

Other Spots:

  • Central Park Carousel
  • Columbus Circle (where I suggest starting your journey through the park)
  • Central Park Zoo
  • Sculptures – Alice in Wonderland, Balto, & more!
  • Tavern on the Green
  • The Obelisk
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art

With 843 acres to explore, there are numerous places throughout Central Park that one easily could spend hours staring at. I will say it time and time again – please visit during the fall! You will have an incredible time and leave with so many memorable photos.
